Realistic portrait with orange bird on a calf

Realism · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A realistic portrait of a figure with white markings across the face, wearing hoop earrings, beaded necklaces and layered cords. Below the portrait, a bird with bright orange plumage and a dark head is rendered in fine detail. Smooth blended shading and soft background tones give the piece strong depth, and the tattoo fills the length of the calf.

The rain has been coming sideways across the market since eight, and by eleven the tarpaulin over your bead stall sags like a belly full of water. You are sorting a tin of loose glass by colour when the woman from the fish stall shouts that the orange one is back in the rafters, and would you please do something about it before it leaves its muck on her cod.

You climb onto the crate and look up. It is a bishop bird, no bigger than your fist, its head black as a burnt match and its back the colour of a sunset over the old gasworks. It has been coming to the market all autumn, picking at crumbs under the stalls and stealing the orange cotton your aunt left behind when she moved to Cardiff. Yesterday you caught it working a loop of thread through the iron girders, building a nest out of scraps people had dropped.

Your aunt used to say beads were a language, every colour a word, and that a good trader listens before she speaks. So you sit down again and string a length of brown wood and white glass the way she taught you, and set it on the counter like a question. A boy in a wet anorak picks it up, turns it in the light and asks what it means. You tell him it means wait. He laughs and buys it anyway.

When the shutters come down the bird is gone, but the nest is there, woven tight into the girder, with one orange thread hanging loose like a bookmark. In the morning the rain has stopped. Your tin is missing one small white bead, and when you look up, it is sitting in the nest, catching the first light.
