Crown and bandana portrait on the hand

Realism · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic portrait of a pair of eyes above a paisley bandana mask, with an ornate crown across the wrist and back of the hand. The shading is smooth and detailed, with fine highlights on the eyes and crown, all in black ink and greys. The design wraps around the hand, with the bandana covering the fingers and the crown sitting at the top of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The crown had come in a cardboard box along with a bundle of football pools coupons and a tin of metal polish, and Nadia Croft nearly put the whole lot out on the pavement. Then she saw the bandana folded underneath it, its paisley gone soft at the creases, and a photograph pinned to one corner.

The photograph showed a girl of perhaps nineteen standing in a bus shelter in Dudley, the cloth pulled up over her nose, her eyes fixed on whoever held the camera. Someone had written on the back in biro: Sunday, don't tell Mum. Nadia turned it over twice before she read it again, then put the kettle on because her hands needed something to do.

She rang the number on the envelope that evening. A man answered with a television murmuring behind him and said his sister had left the crown at a market stall in 1994 and never come back for it, and would Nadia mind keeping it a while longer. He didn't ask what it was worth. She heard him breathing, the way people do when they are deciding not to say something.

On Saturday she carried the box up to the stall herself and set the crown on the counter, the bandana folded beneath it. The man came, quieter in person than he had sounded on the phone. He lifted the crown, turned it to the light and laughed once, short and surprised. Then he tied the bandana over his mouth and looked at her above the paisley, and for a moment neither of them said anything at all.
