Realistic rose with leaves, pencil design
Realism · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing of an open rose bloom surrounded by several leaves and thin curling stems, with a small leaf rising at the top. The petals are shaded with soft gradients and fine hatching to give a three-dimensional look, and small dark dots are scattered around the leaves. The rose sits centrally on a pale, plain background, with the leaves extending outward to frame it.

The hotel on Marrow Point had one rose, and it grew against the back wall of the kitchen yard where the bins were kept. Mrs Feather said it had come with the building, the way the damp had. Every June the old woman who ran the boarding house cut one bloom for the table in the front room and nobody asked her why she never cut two.

The year the storms came early, a lodger named Tobias Quell arrived with a sea trunk and a grey pencil case and asked if he might draw the rose before the wind took it. Mrs Feather said he could draw what he liked so long as he left the leaves on. He sat on an upturned crate for four days, shading the petals with the side of his lead until the paper looked like breath on a cold window. On the fifth morning the bloom had opened further than he had drawn it, and he had to start again.
When he left, he folded the drawing into his coat and forgot the trunk. Mrs Feather found it under the bed with a pressed leaf inside, and a note that read only: the dots are where the rain got in. She kept it in the drawer with the tide tables. The following June, a grey pencil case was left on the step with no name on it, and beside it a single bud, cut clean, wrapped in damp newspaper.
