Shaded rose with leaves pencil design
Realism · Black and grey · Flash
A realistic rose in full bloom is drawn at the centre of the sheet, with its petals rendered in soft graduated greys. Several shaded leaves surround the flower on all sides, with cross-hatched pencil strokes defining their veins and edges. The image is entirely black and grey on a pale paper background, with the design filling most of the frame.

Ruth Abernathy, who ran the place with her sleeves rolled to the elbow, slid a paper placemat across to me and said the man in the corner had been drawing on it since dawn and wouldn't say why.

He was sketching with a stub of graphite he kept behind one ear. I watched over my coffee as he built the flower from the middle out, a tight spiral first, then the petals lifting one by one like someone unfolding a letter they had read too many times. He shaded each curve with his thumb, then went back with short hatched strokes along the leaves until the veins looked wet.
"Where are you headed?" I asked when he finally put the pencil down.
"Wherever the road stops being interesting," he said, and tapped the drawing. "This one's for a woman in Barstow who said I'd never get a bloom to sit still on paper. Wanted to prove her wrong before the bus left."
He left the placemat under the sugar pot, its edge curling in the draught. I ended up with it because nobody else wanted it. Outside, the road ran pale and straight towards the hills, and the rose sat between salt and pepper, grey petals catching the light, leaves reaching for a place to land. I folded it once, carefully, and put it in my jacket where the heat couldn't reach.
