Realistic woman's face tattoo on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A photograph of an upper arm carrying a large realistic tattoo of a woman's face, spanning from a brow and blue eye down the nose to parted dark red lips with visible teeth. The shading is smooth and detailed, with soft gradients on the skin tones and sharp highlights in the eye. The arm is shown against a dark background, with a white sleeveless top partly in view on the left.

The face came out of the coal wall on the Tuesday, when the cutter had taken another yard off the Lowmoor seam and Walter Hebden held his lamp close enough to see it. There was a woman's brow first, then a blue eye no bigger than a pit-cap button, wet and looking straight down the drift at him. He said nothing to the other men, and nothing to the overman either, because a face in coal is bad luck to name and worse to sell.

By the Friday the whole shift knew. The eye had lashes, real ones, black as the seam, and when the lamps dimmed the lips below it went dark red, as if she had been eating cherries in the dark. Old Mrs Pryce from the terrace said the seam was a keeper and had always kept something. Her own mother had seen a hand in the face at the Gilfach pit, and the hand had told her which day the roof would come in. She brought her sons up early that day, and nobody died.
Walter went down alone on the Monday with a tin of cold tea and a candle stub, and he sat before the face until the candle guttered. The lips moved, or perhaps only the light did, and a voice said his name the way his mother used to say it, Wal, as if he were still eight years old and late for his tea. It asked him to take the cutter back up the drift and leave the wall standing. He did. The colliery manager docked his wage for a month and called him superstitious, and Walter let him.
The face is still there. Men touch the wall on the way in for luck, the eye still catches the lamp, and when the seam is worked out someone will have to cut carefully around her.
