Realistic face tattoo on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A large realistic tattoo shows a woman's face wrapped around the upper arm, with a blue eye and detailed lashes near the shoulder, a nose in the middle and glossy red lips with visible teeth near the elbow. The shading is smooth and soft, with natural skin tones and fine detail in the lashes and lip texture. The arm is photographed against a plain black background, with a white printed t-shirt sleeve on the left.

Tom Agnew stood in the road every morning with his cap pushed back, telling me the lips were too red. I had the eye finished by the Tuesday, a blue that took three days of glazing to get right, and the lashes done in fine strokes that caught the grey light off the water. The nose came next, curving round the corner of the net loft so that from the quay it looked like a woman turning to see who was coming in.

The commission came from the harbour board, who wanted something for the winter festival and had no idea what it would cost in wet weather. The wall was brick under old lime wash, and every afternoon the sea wind lifted the sheet I had pinned over the mouth. I worked with rain running down my collar and a transistor on the step playing the shipping forecast, so I knew when to stop and when to hurry.

On the Thursday Tom brought a tin from his shed, the paint gone thick and grainy. Under the lime wash there had been a face before, his mother's idea, painted the year the Morag went down with four men aboard. Nobody had told the board. He wanted the red matched to that, not to the lipstick sold in the shops. I mixed it on a saucer until it was the colour of a boat's bottom paint under a wet sky, and he nodded once and went home.

When the fleet came in on Saturday the lamp was still lit at the end of the mole, and the lips were the first thing the boats could make out from the bar. Tom stood at the rail of the Sandra Jean and raised his hand. I didn't look up to check whether he was waving at me or at the wall.
