It was red as a lamp in the fog, its whiskers streaming yellow like a flare, and it hung over the water with a grey moon behind its head. Mrs Pryce from the chandlery came down in her dressing gown and crossed herself twice. The dragon looked at us with green eyes, then looked past us toward the lighthouse, as if it had business there.
I rowed out with the lantern because someone had to. The anchor chain was coiled in its claws, not tangled but wound neatly, the way a fishwife winds wool. When I reached for it the creature lowered its jaw, and I saw its teeth were the colour of wet slate. It breathed out a cloud that smelled of tar and cloves.
I unhooked the anchor and passed the chain up to it. It nodded once and let the links drop into my boat. Next morning the Marguerite rode steady at her mooring, and on the quay Tobias asked what the creature had wanted. I told him it had only wanted the tide to be honest, and that I had promised the same.
