You will not believe me, so I have sent Tomas down with the measuring rope. Its coils are as thick as the cart wheel, and its white scales have gone the colour of pearl in the evening light.

The sooty little ones came with it, the ones that tumble out of the cinder pit at the mill. They roll the ash into balls and feed them to the dragon one at a time, and it breathes out a soft red smoke over the water that smells of plums. Mrs Abernethy says the smoke is why the late Bramleys are sweet this year, when the spring frost soured everything else on the Pennick side.

Yesterday I climbed the orchard wall to see it properly. Its teal fins trailed like wet ribbon, and it turned one eye up at me, and I did not run. I left a basket of windfalls on the landing stone. This morning the basket was empty, and in its place sat a single soot ball, warm as bread.

Come home before the harvest and bring your good boots, because the ferry will need two pairs of hands to pole it across. Ask Tomas to show you the ball. I have kept it on the windowsill, and it has not gone out yet. Your loving sister, Ada.
