Red dragon and black spine across a back

Japanese · Back · Mixed · Photo

A man is photographed from behind, shirtless, showing a large red dragon wrapped in black clouds across his left shoulder, upper arm and upper back. Down the centre of his back runs a black, stylised spine with outlined vertebrae that taper to a point at the neck. The bold outlines and flat fills sit against a plain, softly lit background, with a few paler patches of skin visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had buried the lower road by noon, and Nell Garside was still scraping ash from the grate when the stranger came in carrying a long wooden box under one arm. He set it on the bar without a word and asked for a room with a view of the pass. Nell told him the only view on offer was the painted screen in the back parlour, which her grandfather had bought off a sea captain for two shillings and a pie.

The screen showed a red dragon coiled through a bank of black cloud, its scales caught in the last of the light. Nobody in the valley had ever seen the cloud part to show the sky behind it. After supper the stranger went to the screen, and Nell, pretending to count spoons, watched him trace the line of the dragon's tail with two fingers. He said the sea captain had owed him money, and that the box held the ridge-pole of a house he had once lived in, a house with a spine of black timber running from its roof down to its foundations.

Through the night the wind worked at the shutters. Nell went to bed and dreamt of the pass, a long black backbone of rock with cairns marching down to the valley like vertebrae, and the dragon lifting out of the cloud to coil along it. In the morning the snow had stopped and the screen was bare. The stranger had gone, leaving the box open on the bar, and inside lay a single red scale no bigger than a thumbnail.

Nell did not tell her mother. She carried the scale to the window, where the pass stood clean and white under a thin sun, and set it on the sill facing the mountain. Somewhere above the snowline, something shifted its weight, and the drifts slid slow as breath down the black spine of the rock.
