Geometric spine tattoo on a back

Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A bare back is shown from behind, with a vertical column of black geometric motifs running from the upper back down the spine. The motifs include stacked diamonds, zigzag lines, arrow shapes and small dots, all drawn in solid black linework with some filled areas. The ink is the only colour against warm skin and a blurred outdoor background of foliage and stone.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, the fire is only warm where you sit, and I am too old to shout across a hall. You want to know how Ysolde of the salt marshes came to walk the Ridge of Amberfall without a map? She had no map. She had her grandmother's sign, a column of little stone diamonds cut down the spine of the mountain, and every mark on it meant something a body could follow.

The stacked diamonds were the cairns, one above another, each a day's walk apart. Where the zigzags ran sideways like a dropped rope, the path crossed scree and you kept your feet low. Arrows pointed the way the wind would come from, and the chevrons were the places where the old kings had made their people turn back. Nobody in Kessary ever read the signs wrong twice, because the wrong ones fell into the gorge and the gorge kept its own counsel.

Ysolde came to the last dot at the top of the column in the deep of winter, with her boots gone and one glove. The dot was a hollow the size of a thumb, filled with rainwater. She drank, and found the cairn at the bottom had been built by her own hands, forty years before she was born, in the stories her grandmother had told her.

So the sign was not a path up the mountain at all. It was a path back down to herself, and she took it, and the valley people still say the water at the top never freezes for anyone who has walked it.
