Red feather tattoo on lower back

Realism · Back · Colour · Photo

A single feather is drawn at a slight diagonal, with fine dark outlines and red ink filling the vanes. Grey shading along the quill and beneath the feather gives it volume and a soft cast shadow. The feather sits off-centre in the lower part of the frame against plain skin, with a dark lingerie strap visible along the bottom edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The heron that stood at the edge of the Ashby mere had lost a feather in the spring flood, and it was the feather that Mabel Crane found caught on the reeds the morning of her wedding. Red as a robin's breast, it was, though no robin would own a feather so long. Her mother said it was a sign and her aunt said it was a nuisance, and Mabel tucked it into her sleeve and forgot it until the church bells had stopped.

At the lych gate the groom's brother came running with his hat in his hand. The bridge over the mere had gone under in the night, he said, and the vicar was stuck on the far bank with the rings in his coat. They would have to wait for the ferryman, who was drunk, or swim, which no one would ask of the vicar. Mabel stood with her bouquet and the feather in her sleeve and felt the day tilt.

She walked down to the water in her good shoes. The mere was grey and quiet, and the heron was there on one leg, watching her as if it had been waiting. She took the red feather from her cuff and held it out over the water. The wind caught it, turned it once, and carried it across the reeds toward the far bank, where the vicar stood waving his coat.

He came over by the stepping stones the bride's father had laid years back, and the rings were still dry in his pocket. Nobody mentioned the feather afterwards, but the ferryman swore that the heron stayed on that post every day until the frost, and that a single red quill lay in the shallows beside it, bright as a coal.
