Red leaf tattoo on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A single leaf is tattooed on the forearm, shown with a green stem and veined edges in red, pink and white. Soft shading in grey and pale blue gives the leaf volume, and the outline is dark along its edges. Above it, a black linework design with floral or scrolling elements and partial script is visible, and a tattoo fragment sits at the lower left.

Ada Price found the red one snagged on a spoke of the big wheel, where the bulbs had been strung the evening before, and she worked it free with two fingers so the stem wouldn't snap.

Her uncle Tomas always said that leaves on the rides meant the season was finished, the way gulls meant weather. The Waltzer cars were already off their bases and the generator coughed like an old man on the stairs. Somewhere a radio played a song nobody had chosen, and the candyfloss man swore at a crate that wouldn't fold.

Ada had nine days of takings in a cashbox under the bench and a letter from the council saying the field had been sold to a supermarket. She pressed the leaf flat inside the ticket book, where its veins showed through the paper like rivers on a map nobody had bothered to survey. Pink ran into white along its edges, as if someone had dipped it in the stripes of the big tent and left it to dry in the shade of the ghost train.

When the convoy pulled out at noon, she kept the window down. The book sat on the dashboard with its green stem poking out of the page, pointing north up the A-road. At the first roundabout she took the wrong exit on purpose and didn't tell the others.
