Small pink butterfly on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small butterfly with two pink wings, outlined in bold black linework, sits on the forearm. The pink fill has soft shading across the wings, and two black dots with curled black tails sit at the body end of the design. The background is softly blurred, with a pale skin tone and a light grey object at the left edge.

The butterfly had got into the signal box again, a pink thing no bigger than a fingernail, and Walter Dunn spent a full minute flapping his cap at it before he gave up and said something unkind to the stove. Nobody had ever explained to him how a creature so small found its way through a shut door. Perhaps it came up the embankment with the coal smoke, or rode in on the hem of a passenger's coat.

His granddaughter Nell, who spent her Saturdays sorting seed packets at the allotments, said it was a painted lady and not to be frightened off. She leaned close to the glass to study its two black dots, each with a little curled tail, and declared them feelers. Walter thought they looked more like full stops that had wandered off the page. The wings were the colour of rhubarb fool, darker where the shading gathered, and they opened and closed on the brass handle of the points lever as though it were a flower.
The 4.12 from Leeds was late, the wire from Carrow Junction had gone quiet, and the lever would not pull clean. Walter laid his palm over the cold brass and felt it tremble. The butterfly lifted off, circled once in front of his face, and settled back on the handle, and he understood then that it was not stuck to anything. It had been holding the lever steady all along.
He eased the points over, the signal dropped, and the train came in on the minute, the first on time in a month. When he opened the door to the platform the butterfly went out ahead of him, and Nell, waiting by the water tank, laughed and said it had gone to see the train off.
