Red poppies with bud on side ribs
Botanical · Ribs · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows two large red poppy flowers with dark centres and a closed bud at the top, joined by a thin black wavy stem that runs across the skin. The petals are shaded with deep crimson, orange and near-black, giving them volume and soft gradients. The design sits diagonally along the side of the torso, with the flowers in the lower half and the bud near the upper edge of the frame.

The cold came up off the Horn and the poppies had to be carried below each night. Ada Penhallow, ship's gardener on the barque Constance, counted the pots lashed under the skylight: seven of them, the last of her father's seed, sown in Cornish clay he had dug himself. Only one had flowered since Falmouth, a single red bloom that opened at noon and folded by four, as if it had somewhere else to be.

Captain Rowe didn't hold with growing things at sea. He called them ballast with ideas, and had her move the pots twice when the spray took the rail. Ada didn't argue. She talked to the plants instead, low, in the watch below, telling them about the orchard at home and the cider press gone to rust in the barn.
On the forty-first day the bud on the stem by the galley door began to split. Cook came out with a cup of tea gone cold and stood beside her. "That's a poppy," he said, as though she might have forgotten. "It is," she said. Then the wind dropped, the sea went flat and glassy, and the bloom opened all at once, two petals wrinkled like silk from a drawer, dark at the heart as a banked coal.
Rowe found the pressed stem three weeks later, flat between the tide tables in his cabin. He didn't throw it out. He said nothing about it at all, but the next morning there was a fresh pot lashed by the galley door, and someone had cut a neat round hole in its lid for the next bud to come through.
