Red rose on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A red rose with black-shaded petals and a bold black outline sits at the centre of the frame, surrounded by gold-brown leaves. Soft shading in the petals and leaves gives the rose depth, and a partial tattoo in red and green appears at the top edge of the photo. The skin sits on a white disposable pad, with the design filling most of the frame.

Hold the lamp steady, our Dennis, because the frost gets into the glass before you do. That's the Clydesdale bed, that row there, and the one you're after is at the far end where the hedge gives out. My father planted it the spring the pit closed, and he swore it would bloom red for the show whatever the coal board said.

Nobody had grown a red rose worth the name that year. Every bloom came out with its edges scorched by the smoke drifting off the tip, and the judges turned their noses up at the lot. But my father cut the outer petals back to the first clean layer, then shaded the rest with soot he rubbed in by hand, and when Mrs Hollis stood over the trestle table she couldn't find a fault except that it looked like the inside of a furnace.

He took the cup that August. Gold-brown leaves, a heavy head bowed over the card, and the black at its heart like a bruise that had decided to stay. Mrs Hollis never forgave him, and I don't think he ever quite forgave the rose for winning.

So when you ask why I keep it, that's the answer. Mind the step, and don't touch the petals. They've been dusted with the same soot for forty years, and I'd rather not start the job over.
