Red rose with green leaves on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A full-bloom red rose with layered petals sits at the centre of the forearm, surrounded by green leaves with dark shading and small pink accents at their tips. Bold black outlines define the petals and leaves, with solid colour fills and soft tonal shading inside the shapes. The rose fills most of the frame against a plain white paper towel, with a partial blue tattoo and some dark ink visible at the edges.

Dear Nell,

The gale took the washing line and half the slates off the byre, but it left the old red rose on the south wall standing, which I still can't account for. Mr Pruett next door says the wall holds the sun, but I think she simply refused to be knocked down. Two of her canes snapped at the root, so I bound them with garden twine and a strip of my old apron. By the time the wind dropped she had three full blooms, deep crimson at the heart and paler at the rim where the petals curl back like the edges of a good letter.
You asked in your last note whether the island feels like a cage. Some weeks it does. The ferry runs twice a day when the sea allows, and the post comes when the ferry does. But then the bees find the lavender, the gulls start their quarrelling at four in the morning, and I think, well, this is where the rose chose to grow, so this is where I'll stay.
The leaves are a darker green than they were in spring, almost black where the light doesn't reach. Their tips have gone a faint pink, which Mr Pruett says is the plant showing off. I told him it was only the cold, and he laughed and said there's no difference on this rock.
I've wrapped a cutting in wet newspaper and put it in the tin with the tea. Plant it in the north bed when you get home, and don't let anyone tell you it won't take. It will. Mind the ferry steps, they're slick after rain.
All my love, Margaret
