Black fine line script reading Redeemed on the inner forearm near the wrist, with the palm of the hand open above it.

Redeemed script on an inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A hand is held palm up while the inner forearm shows the word Redeemed in black, flowing cursive script that tapers into a long lead-in stroke. The lettering is thin, even and crisp, with no shading, set against pale skin on a grey floor with denim in the background. The image is a simple, well-lit close view of the tattoo and wrist.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Penhallow has pinned the pawn ticket to the kitchen board beside the laundry rota, and for a fortnight you have walked past it with your tea going cold. Pale green card, a number in purple ink, eleven pounds written in her careful hand. Your father's pocket watch sits in a shop on Fore Street in Porthleven, waiting on a debt that was never really his to make.

The boarding house is shut for the season except for the two top rooms, where the Dutch couple from October still pay in cash and never complain about the damp. You take the early bus with the ticket folded inside your glove. The pawnbroker, a thin man with a magnifying glass on a cord round his neck, counts the notes twice, then holds the watch up to the window as though the light might tell him something. He turns it over. On the back, scratched small, are the initials you had forgotten were there.

He stamps the ticket with a rubber stamp, the ink still wet, and slides it back across the counter. REDEEMED, it says, in capitals that have bled slightly at the edges. Outside, gulls are fighting over a bag of chips on the harbour wall, and the wind pushes grit against the glass. You stand a long while with the watch ticking warm in your palm.

Then you walk back up the hill past the chapel and the shuttered ice cream kiosk. At the boarding house you do not go to the kitchen board. You open the drawer under the telephone, the one Mrs Penhallow keeps locked, and you put the watch inside beside the spare keys. The ticket you fold into your coat pocket, where it will stay.
