Black and grey flash design of a bearded figure in a crown of thorns, with cherubs, a skull, an armoured angel with a sword, an apple and praying hands with a rosary.

Religious allegory flash with skull and angel

Realism · Black and grey · Flash

A detailed black and grey design built around a bearded face crowned with thorns, with cherubs, a skull, an armoured angel holding a sword and a sleeping child arranged around it. The shading uses fine hatching and soft tonal gradients on a cream background, with bold solid black thorns and wing shapes for contrast. The composition stacks the elements vertically, with scrollwork, birds and praying hands filling the gaps.

Ada Rourke had been told the bearded head was the last of the old reredos, the one the bombing had split down the nose, and she was to make it whole before the Dean's Sunday. She knelt on sacking in the lean-to behind the cathedral works yard, a tin of lime paste at her knee, and tried to match the brow to a photograph taken in 1931 by a man who had since died.

The crown of thorns was the hard part. Her master, old Tomasz Wren, had cut it in a single pass, each point sharp as a fishhook, and had told her never to soften them. 'Thorns are honest,' he said. 'Everything else in this building apologises.' Beside the head, the armoured angel held its sword high, and the apple in the hand of the sleeping stone woman had lost its stem years ago. Tomasz had kept a scrap of that apple in his waistcoat pocket for as long as Ada had known him.

On Friday he did not come in. The foreman found his tools laid out square on the bench, a rosary of jet beads coiled beside the sacking, and a note tucked under the lid of the tin: Finish the hands. Ada spent the afternoon on the praying palms, polishing the knuckles until the grain showed, while pigeons came down off the roof to walk the scaffold like clerks.

On Sunday she pressed the beads into the stone palm and stepped back into the cold. The bearded face looked out over the congregation with its eyes shut, and for the first time she saw that the sleeping child was not dead, only waiting for someone to finish the hands.
