Revolver dissolving into lilies and strawberries
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A pen and ink drawing of a revolver in profile, with its barrel and cylinder giving way to a dense spray of lilies, other flowers, leaves and small strawberries. The linework is fine and detailed, with hatching and stippled shading on the grip, petals and foliage. The image is monochrome on a plain white background, with the composition running left to right and the flowers balancing the heavier gun shape.

You will laugh, but the revolver is still in the drawer where your brother left it. I took it out this morning to check whether it was real or only a prop from the pier theatre, and it was real, heavy as a bag of coal, with six chambers empty and the cylinder stiff with old oil.

I sat on the bed with it in my lap for the best part of an hour, listening to the sea come in under the window like someone clearing their throat. Then I went down to the market on the front and bought every bundle of lilies the Hendersons had, because it seemed a shame to waste a Thursday on being frightened. Mr Hammond at the florist's asked whether I was planning a funeral. I said only a small one, and he gave me the strawberries free, which was kind of him.
I have put the gun in the coal scuttle with a sprig of white lily tucked through the trigger guard. It looks ridiculous, and that is the point. Come down on Saturday if the trains behave. The room at the top is yours, and the flowers are already opening.
Your loving sister, Edie
