Black and grey · Flash

The drawing shows two revolvers angled outwards in a mirrored pair, with a central cluster of large blossoms, buds and swirling stems. A woman's face sits at the centre beneath the flowers, framed by long strands of hair and bold tribal-style black linework. The design uses clean outlines and grey shading on a plain white background.

She had never fired anything in her life. The guns had come out of a tin trunk under the stairs, behind the christening gown and the brass bell from the old school. Their barrels were blacked and their grips worn pale where a hand had gripped them through forty years of hill-shooting. Morag turned one over and found, scratched inside the trigger guard, the initials E.M. and a date from the year the herring left the bay.

By midnight the table was ringed with lilies and wild garlic set in jam jars, and she had stood one revolver either side of the window box, muzzles pointing at the sea. In the morning the hens had got into the bulbs, but the first green shoots had already pushed up through the cylinder's seam.

Her brother rang from the mainland to ask about the guns. "They're planted," she said, and hung up before he could decide whether she was joking. The gulls came down on the rail, and for the first time in weeks the house smelt of something other than oil.
