Revolver with rose and vines

Black and grey · Flash

A black and grey drawing of a revolver with its cylinder and barrel shaded in fine detail, wrapped in thin curling vines. A full-blown rose sits at the lower right of the revolver, with serrated leaves scattered along the stems to the left. The linework is crisp and the shading builds soft greys across the metal and petals on a plain white background.

The man left the revolver on my counter at ten past four on a Tuesday, wrapped in fishmonger's paper that smelled of brine. I asked what he wanted for it. He said nothing, only that it should be somewhere other than his mother's sideboard, then he walked out past the gulls on the quay without taking the ticket.

I'm not a sentimental woman, but I am a careful one, so I opened the paper on the glass and looked. Five brass chambers, one empty. Round the frame ran a vine, gone over in a fine hand, and from its coil came a rose, full as a cabbage, its petals darkening at the edges the way they do after too long in the rain. Someone had taken real trouble over it. Old Tomas on the bollard used to say the sea gives back whatever you feed it, and I didn't like how neatly that fitted.

The ticket lapsed in three weeks. I sold the thing to a collector from Falmouth and spent the money on a bare-rooted rose from the nursery up the hill, a sorry bundle of kindling. I planted it in the window box where the afternoon sun lands, drove in a stake and tied the first green shoot to it with twine.

By June it had three flowers and a leaf the size of a thumbprint. I still listen some mornings for a step on the flagstones, but the only thing that comes up the lane is the milk cart. The rose keeps opening anyway, one petal at a time, whether anyone is buying or not.
