Rose and pocket watch on an arm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large rose with soft, layered petals sits above a detailed pocket watch with Roman numerals and visible hands and gears. Smooth shading creates depth and highlights on the petals and watch casing, with fine swirls filling the background. The design is in black and grey ink and fills the frame against a plain, dark background.

Sit down, the bus is late again, and the man in the booth will not look up until he has finished his tea. So I will tell you about Anneliese and the watch while we wait.

Anneliese mended clocks in a town where the river was the border. Every Thursday she carried her father's pocket watch across the bridge at Vrba to be oiled by an old man on the far bank. The guard on the crossing, a thin fellow called Tomas, stamped her papers and always asked her the time. She told him the hour the watch believed, which was never quite the hour on the church tower.

One winter the watch stopped at ten to midnight and would not be coaxed back to life. Tomas saw her standing in the cold with it open in her palm and said, bring it into the back room, where the stove is. Inside, the gears were furred with frost. Pressed flat between the casing and the glass was a rose, dried brown at the edges, from a garden on the wrong side of the wire. Her father had been sending flowers across in the case for years, tucked where the dogs could not sniff them out, and Tomas had been the one to slip them into her coat. Nobody had told her. Nobody had needed to.

She wound the watch, and it ticked. The hands crept round to the right hour, and the old man on the far bank never got the watch that week at all. The rose is still in there, if you ever open it. The petals have gone grey from the damp. Now, listen, that is the engine. Keep your papers ready, and do not tell the man in the booth the time.
