Rose and pocket watch on the thigh
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of a rose in full bloom sits above an open pocket watch with its chain draped across the skin. The rose and watch are shaded with smooth gradients and fine detail, including the clock face numerals and watch hands. The image is taken at an angle against a plain wall, with the tattoo filling most of the frame and the upper body and face out of shot.

Mind the puddle by the fish stall, love, it's deeper than it looks, same as most things on this market. Right, where was I. The rain had been at it since dawn, bouncing off the canvas roofs of Harrow Street so hard the traders had to shout their prices. Old Ida Pell sold roses from a bucket by the clock tower, and she sold them for a penny because nobody in that town had bought a whole penny's worth of anything since the mill closed.

Across from her, Samuel Greaves mended watches in a glass box no bigger than a bread bin. He had a pocket watch that had stopped at twenty to four, the hour his brother went down the pit shaft in nineteen twelve, and he would not let anyone open its back. Every morning he wound it, every morning it sat still, and every morning he set it on the counter beside Ida's bucket and told her the time was his own business.
Ida noticed the watch was not the thing that was broken. It was the chain. Someone had snapped a link years before and he had never let it be soldered, so it hung loose across the velvet like a question nobody would ask. So one wet Thursday she took a rose from her bucket, pinned its stem through the chain's last link with a hatpin, and said nothing at all.
Samuel didn't speak to her for a week. Then, on the Saturday, the rain stopped, the clock tower struck noon, and he found the watch in his palm, ticking. The rose was still wet on the chain. Samuel looked up at a sky he had not troubled to look at since nineteen twelve, and for the first time in thirty years the watch and the tower agreed on the hour.
