Pocket watch and roses on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows an open pocket watch with a numbered dial, a date window and a chain looping over the top, with a rose at the upper left and another below the watch. The shading is smooth and realistic, with soft highlights on the petals and metal casing. The design wraps around the forearm and is shown in black and grey ink on a tiled floor background.

The pass closed on the Tuesday, and by Thursday the snow had climbed halfway up the kitchen windows of the Black Hart, so nobody argued when Aunt Win sent me up to the attic for the spare wallpaper. I found the watch instead, wrapped in a flannel shirt at the bottom of a tin trunk. Its silver had gone grey at the hinges, the lid hung open, and a chain of tiny links ran from the bow like something pulled out of a river. Somebody had stopped it at eight minutes to five.

Aunt Win said it belonged to Thomas Coyle, who drank his wages at the bar every Friday and walked out one February with a pale rose from the garden pinned to his coat. He never came back for the watch. She said roses had come up along the drive every spring since, though nobody had planted them there, and the frost always took them by May. I told her that was nonsense. She laughed and put the kettle on.

That night the wind dropped and the house went so quiet I could hear the watch's ticking through the pillow once I had wound it with the key from the trunk and set it by the kitchen clock. In the morning the back door was buried to the handle. Aunt Win dug a path with the coal shovel and stopped at the wall, where two grey rose heads stood up out of the drift as clean as if they had been cut that minute.

I left the watch on the kitchen table beside the bread. Its lid was closed now, and it was still running at twenty past nine, which is the hour the snow started to thin on the road.
