Rose and vine tattoo on a woman's back
Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman seen from behind holds her hair up with both hands, showing a tattoo of shaded roses and sweeping curled vines running down one side of her back, with a small group of Chinese characters above on the upper spine. The linework is bold and flowing, and the roses are rendered in soft grey shading. The plain dark grey backdrop and low lighting keep the focus on the tattoo.

Harriet Coyle had grafted the same climbing rose for thirty-one years, and the sap on her knuckles that April smelled of green wood and the rain that had not yet stopped on the north wall. Her brother Tom's letter lay on the potting bench under a trowel. He wanted the old glasshouse sold before the autumn valuers came, and he had written the word 'sensible' three times.

The rose had started as a cutting her father carried home from a nursery outside Canton in 1948, wrapped in damp moss inside a biscuit tin. The label was in a hand none of them could read. Her father had pinned a copy of those strokes to the inside of the shed door, and he swore they meant patience, home and good soil. Harriet suspected he had invented the translation to make her laugh on wet mornings.
She worked the bud union while the light lasted, binding the scion with raffia while the wisteria she had trained beside it curled round her wrists whenever she reached. A graft only takes if both halves agree to it, her father used to say, and she thought of Tom's clipboard man walking the beds, counting pots, pricing the rose by the foot.
By dusk the wrap was tight and the bud had swelled to the colour of a wet thumbnail. She tore a page from the seed catalogue and wrote one line across the back: The rose stays until it has flowered. Then she went out to the wall, stood among the long grey-green stems, and watched the lamp in the potting shed flicker on over roses that had not yet decided to open.
