Manta ray and turtle tattoos on a back
Blackwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman is photographed from behind, showing a large black manta ray tattoo spreading across her upper back, with swirling tribal-style linework and solid black fills. A long, tapering tail runs down the centre of her spine, and a smaller turtle tattoo with bold outlines and dark infill sits low on her back near the waistband. The warm-toned background and soft lighting keep the focus on the ink, and her face is not visible.

The turtle owed the manta a tide, and everyone on Skerry Lowe knew it, because the two of them argued about it every spring when the water went out past the rocks. Nobody could say when the debt began. The fishwives said it was before the lighthouse.

Old Ebb, the turtle, had borrowed the high water one stormy March so she could reach the reef where she meant to lay her eggs. She carried it home in the ridges of her shell, slow and careful, and never quite gave it back. Sallow Wing, the manta, wanted it returned in full, with the salt still in it. Between them went a small brown crab called Nell, who kept the reckoning scratched on a slate of wet sand and wiped it clean at the turn.
One autumn the reckoning would not balance. Nell said the tide had grown fat on interest. Ebb said it had grown thin in her keeping. Both of them were, in their way, right. So Sallow Wing took up her long tail, the dark trailing rope of it, and laid it across the sea floor from the drowned chapel to the reef, measuring the distance by feel. When she lifted it again the water had risen to the chapel steps and stopped there, as if waiting to be told what to do.
Ebb came up slowly out of the deep, shrugged the tide off her back, and let it run. Nell wiped the slate clean. The water has come and gone over those steps ever since, and nobody on the island has ever asked which of them won.
