Rose cluster outline on a thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A cluster of three full-blown roses, a rosebud and several leaves is drawn in black outline across the outer thigh and hip. The linework is even and clean with little or no shading, so the petals and leaf veins are defined by line alone. The image is black and grey, with the pale skin and soft neutral background giving the design strong contrast.

The burin keeps wanting to skate on the copper, so you hold your breath and let the line run where the petal turns. Outside the window the fishing boats knock against their moorings, and Mr Pell from the chandlery has been asking since Tuesday whether the seed-catalogue plates will be ready for the Saturday post. You tell him they will. You have never once lied to him about a line.

Your master taught you to engrave without shadow. Hatching, he said, is for men who cannot trust their drawing. A rose is its edges. Lay the outline true and the reader's eye will fill in the crimson for itself. So you cut the three full-blown heads first, the cupped petals folding over one another like the sleeves of a wet coat, then the bud standing on its thin stem above them, then the leaves, each vein a single stroke that does not lift until it reaches the margin.
On Friday a woman comes up from the quay with a folded sheet pressed flat in her glove. Her husband drew it, she says, the winter before the bar at Penmorrow took him. She asks whether you can cut it in copper so the roses will outlast paper. You unfold it under the lamp. There is no shading anywhere. Only the outline, pressed firm and even, the petals spaced so confidently that you can almost smell them from across the table.
You do not charge her. You cut the plate that night, and when you pull the first proof at dawn the ink sits only in the lines, the paper bare between them, so the roses seem to stand in white light. You hang it over the counter where the harbour shows through the glass, and you leave the empty spaces to the sea.
