Peony cluster on a thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

Three large peony blooms with leaves and a smaller bud spread down the thigh, with petals outlined in bold black linework. Soft grey shading fills the petal folds and centres, giving the flowers depth against the skin. The design fills the frame vertically, with the upper flower cropped at the top edge and the lowest bud near the bottom.

The snow has sealed the lane since Tuesday, and Mrs Abernethy has stopped pretending the coach will come. You sit at the end of the bar with a tin of peony bulbs you found in the cellar, wrapped in newspaper from a year nobody remembers. The label has faded to the colour of weak tea. Pale pink, it promises in the margin, in a hand that presses hard.

Upstairs a guest coughs through a wall. Downstairs the fire has burned to one red eye, and you keep feeding it sticks until your palms are grey. Mrs Abernethy says the bulbs belonged to her husband, who swore peonies would bloom in a yard where nothing else would, provided you were stubborn and didn't mind waiting. He was a slow man with a patient mouth. He never got them into the ground before he died.

So you go out with the trowel at first light, though the earth is iron under the drift. You dig where the sun reaches the back wall first, scrape through the frost and find soft black soil beneath, as if the yard had been keeping something warm for him. You set the three fat bulbs and the one small bud, tuck them in, and stand there with your breath rising like smoke, waiting for something that won't show itself until June.
