Rose made of banknotes on an upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A rose is shaped from folded banknotes, with denomination markings and the words ONE and C.R.E.A.M. printed across the bills. The petals use soft grey gradients and the paper edges have darker linework and shading. The design fills the frame against plain skin.

The bills came folded in a sandwich bag under the seat of the Buick, and Dell had already counted them twice before we hit the state line. Sixty-eight dollars of tips and a grey wad of twenties that belonged to nobody in Barstow. I told him to stop fidgeting with the dash clock. He pulled a fifty from the stack, flattened it on his knee, and started rolling it tight the way his mother used to fold napkins at the Silver Spur.

By Needles he had a rose. Not a good one, he admitted, the petals too stiff, the old president on the face of the note peering out like a bored uncle. But he kept at it, tucking corners, layering a ten behind a twenty so the green showed through like shadow. The little printed letters ran along the edges, C.R.E.A.M. in capitals, and when he held it up to the window the sun came through the paper and made the words glow at the seams. "Money looks prettier when it's not trying to be money," he said. I asked him what that meant, and he just shrugged and kept folding.

The rose rode on the dashboard for three hundred miles, until the heat warped the petals and we coasted into a motel lot with a broken sign. Dell wanted to leave it for the cleaner. I took it instead, pressed it flat between the pages of my atlas, and kept it. Some nights I still open the page to Nevada and find a crease from his thumb on a folded ten.
