Anchor and roses on a forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A bold anchor runs vertically through the centre of the image, with a twisted rope wrapped around its shank and two shaded roses with leaves overlapping its upper section. The linework is heavy and dark, with grey shading giving the anchor metal and the petals volume. The image is in black and grey only, and the tattoo fills most of the frame against a dark blue background.

You have been holding the bouquet too tightly since the lych gate, and when the vicar at St Ives asks for the rings, Maeve's white roses have already gone limp at the stems. Your father, stiff in the front pew, shifts his bad knee and tries to look like a man who has not been crying since breakfast. The ring should be in your waistcoat pocket. Your fingers find it, then find something else: a coil of tarred twine no thicker than a bootlace, wound tight and knotted at one end.

Grandad's knot. He tied it on your sixteenth birthday, the summer you crewed on his crabber out of Newlyn, and told you a rope wrapped round an anchor shank keeps the hook from slipping when the sea gets up. You laughed at him then. Now the twine is cold against your palm, and you understand he must have slipped it into your pocket this morning while you fussed over the buttonholes, because nobody else in the house would have known to.
You work the knot loose with your teeth while Maeve mouths 'what on earth', and the ring rolls out onto the damp satin of her bouquet. You slip it on her finger. She hands you hers. The vicar says something about richer and poorer, and your father finally gives up on dignity and blows his nose on a hymn sheet.
Outside, the tide is coming over the harbour wall, steady and unhurried, the way Grandad always said it should come in when you have made something fast.
