Rose sprig and crystal ball on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a thorned rose stem with three open roses and several leaves, drawn in clean black outline with grey fill. Beneath the foliage, a thin ring with small circular beads encloses a shaded sphere that is rendered with soft grey gradients and a dark highlight. The design sits on the inner forearm against blue denim, with the plain light background keeping the focus on the linework and shading.

The well at Harrowmere had gone dry the summer the miller's daughter turned twelve, and so the village sent her up the hill with a bucket and a message for the old woman who kept the stone. Nobody knew her name. They only knew she had a rosebush growing out of the wall of her hut, thorned and stubborn, and that it flowered in every month of the year.

The girl found the hut by the smell of crushed leaves. The old woman was grinding something in a mortar and did not look up. "Water is in the orb," she said, and nodded at the round grey stone sitting in a ring of pebbles on the table. "You have to ask it nicely, and you have to be honest about the thorns."
The girl asked. The sphere clouded, then cleared, and in it she saw the well, full to its lip, and her own mother standing beside it with her hands wrapped in rags. She understood then that the rose had been planted to keep the ground from taking everything, and that each bloom had cost someone a drop of blood to open. She pricked her finger on the nearest stem and let three drops fall into the dust.
When she carried the bucket down the hill it was heavy and cold, and the three roses on the spray in her hand had opened wider than she remembered. Her mother did not ask where the water came from. She only pressed the girl's bleeding finger to her lips and said nothing at all.
