Skull with flowers on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A skull sits at the base of the design with three flower heads and leaves rising from its top. Bold black outlines define the forms, while the skull and petals are filled with stippled dotwork shading. The tattoo is shown in black and grey on the outer forearm against a plain grey top and green foliage in the background.

The mule refuses the last bend before the pass, so you unload the seed sacks yourself and carry them up the scree in your arms, cursing the wind that keeps trying to take the labels. Mrs Ashgrove said the high meadow above Cold Hollow would flower this year if someone brought her the right bulbs. She said it while stirring a pan of something bitter and green, without once looking up.

Near the cairn you find the skull. It sits in the heather where the path turns, bleached and quiet, and something has been growing out of the crown of it: three stalks, one bearing a poppy-like bloom with a dark eye at its centre, one a tulip gone papery at the edges, one a fat bud still shut. Someone has tended it. The stems are tied with red wool, and the roots are packed with grit from the pass.

You kneel and think of the shepherd who was lost in the snow the winter before, the one Mrs Ashgrove refused to name. The letters you carry are addressed to people who want things to grow. You open the top sack and tip a handful of seed into the hollow of the skull's crown, where soil has gathered like a small dark bowl, and press it down with two fingers.

When you reach the meadow she is waiting at the gate with her arms folded. She does not ask about the mule. She asks only whether you saw the skull. You say yes. She nods once. "Good," she says. "Then it's been fed."
