Rose tattoo on a calf above black platform boots

Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A bent leg is shown from the knee down, with a red rose and green leaves tattooed on the outer shin or calf. Beside the rose is a partly cropped round motif with grey shading and dark linework, and the boots and striped socks sit in the lower frame. The tattoo uses bold black outlines with red and green fills, against a red brick wall and a pale pavement.

The ovens were already breathing when I came in through the back, and Marta had the first trays of rye out on the steel bench like a row of sleeping cats. She didn't look up. She just pushed a mug of tea across the flour and said the clock on the wall had been wrong since Tuesday, so we were working by the bread instead.

I told her I'd fix it. I never did. The round face above the proving cupboard stopped at twenty past four in my first week, and every morning since I'd watched the minute hand give up and lean against the numbers like it was tired of pretending. Marta said that was the point of it. A bakery needs one thing in the room that doesn't care what time it is.

At half five the shutter went up on the high street and the first customers came in with their collars turned up, stamping the wet off their boots. A man in a grey coat bought a loaf and asked for it sliced, and I sliced it, and he said he'd come back tomorrow if the roses were still on the window. We had roses on the window because Marta's sister painted them in July and nobody had had the heart to scrub them off.

When the light finally came grey over the bins, Marta peeled off her apron and looked at the clock for the first time all morning. She tapped the glass twice with one floury knuckle. Nothing moved. She shrugged, and said that it was morning anyway, and we both went out to see it.
