Woman portrait tattoo on a lower leg
Calf · Mixed · Photo
A line drawing of a woman's head in profile, wearing her hair in a bun, sits on the front of the lower leg above the ankle. The linework is dark with shading in the hair and small red accents on the face and ornament. The pale skin and white backdrop keep the focus on the tattoo, with a black boot and a rainbow fur rug in the frame.

Mr Okonedo never let anyone else touch the coral. He held each piece under the north window of his Hockley workshop, turning it slowly as though the stone might still be deciding what it wanted to be. Ada, his apprentice, had watched him for a year without seeing him make a mistake, which unsettled her more than a mistake would have.

The commission came by carrier's cart on a wet Thursday: a sealed box, a sketch of a woman in profile with her hair pinned up in a heavy knot, and a note asking for the face to be cut so she looked away from the viewer, always towards the door. Ada wanted to know who she was. Okonedo said only that the customer had paid in advance and wished to remain unnamed, and that the red must come from the second layer of the shell, where the old stain sat like a bruise under clear skin.
She worked late that week, the gas hissing above her bench, the lamp angled so the relief rose out of the dark. On the seventh night she noticed the profile had changed. The jaw was squarer, the mouth set harder, and a thin red line now ran from the corner of the eye towards the ear, as though someone had cut a truth into it that she had not put there. When she held it to the window, the carved chin seemed to lift.
Okonedo took the cameo from her without a word, read the sketch again, and laid the piece in its velvet box. "Some customers want a likeness," he said. "Others want to be left alone." He wrapped the box in brown paper, and when the cart came the next morning the driver asked nothing. Ada never learned whether the door it faced was the one that had been left open.
