Botanical · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A large rose with shaded petals sits on the upper shoulder of a woman wearing a loose beige off-shoulder jumper with a studded pattern. The rose is rendered in soft grey shading with darker tones along the petal edges and a defined outline. The photograph is cropped below the lips, with the tattoo sitting near the centre left of the frame against a plain wall.

Mared Askew went up the bank every morning with a tin of cold tea and stood beside it, because her husband Tom was still under the fall and the men had stopped digging on the third day. The overman said the seam had closed like a fist. Mared said nothing. On the forty-first morning the rain came sideways off the moor and the spoil slid. Men ran with shovels and found, under a foot of stone, a line of small pale pebbles laid end to end, each one knocked loose from the roadway, leading out of the black towards the daylight. They say Tom came up the path behind them, grey to the eyebrows, and sat down beside his wife without a word. The rose was still standing at the top of the bank, bent but whole, and it was the only thing for a mile that had kept its colour.
