Portrait and lion cubs on an upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large tattoo covers the upper arm and shoulder area, showing a woman's face in portrait with two lion cubs beside and below it. The work uses soft grey shading and fine detail in the fur and facial features, with darker tones around the edges. The image is a close, slightly angled crop, with a hand and ring visible at the right edge.

The cubs came off the Pottersfield carrier in late August, when the Kentish apples were dropping faster than the pickers could bag them. Nell Varley signed for the crate with her thumb, her fingers sticky with wasp-bitten windfalls, and she did not look inside until the driver had gone. Two cubs looked up at her through the slats, grey-gold and blinking, with the same dazed patience as the bruised fruit underfoot.

The travelling show had folded in Maidstone. Its owner, a man called Teague who had never once paid his farrier on time, had left the animals to whoever would take them, and the orchard had the only barn wide enough. Nell's father said they would fetch fifty pounds from a zoo in Bristol if they lived past October. Nell fed them warm milk from a tin with a rag teat and sat with them in the straw until the light went copper through the cracked boards.
By the first frost she had stopped counting days. The cubs slept in a heap against the cider press, one head tucked under the other, and in the mornings they climbed the ladders after her, tumbling down through the branches like wet laundry. Her father stopped talking about Bristol. He painted the barn door green, then grey, and went quiet whenever Nell asked why.
The letter from Bristol came in November. Nell read it twice at the gate, folded it into her apron pocket, and walked back up through the rows where the last windfalls lay split and sweet in the grass. She did not answer it. Instead she pinned a photograph of the pair above the cold hearth and drew, in charcoal, the two faces beside her mother's, so that anyone who came in would see the family at once.
