Rose with leaves and buds design
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A rose in full bloom sits at the centre, surrounded by a closed bud and several pointed leaves that spread out in a loose cluster. The design uses bold black outlines with soft grey pencil shading on the petals and leaves, with light dotted stippling around the stems. The drawing is in black and grey on a plain white background, with the composition running diagonally from upper left to lower right.

The judges had already walked past the Hartwell table twice when Dennis lifted the cloth off the crate, and Maureen at the next stall gave him the look she had been giving him since spring. Three rows of bloom, scented, the colour of weak tea going pink at the edges. He had grown them for thirty-one years in the same strip of clay behind the Co-op, and every August someone in the village found a reason to say the roses were a bit leggy this year.

The big bloom in the centre of the bench was the one he had fretted over since June, pale at the heart, its outer petals curling back like a skirt lifted off wet pavement. Beside it sat a closed bud, tight as a fist, tucked under two pointed leaves. He had meant to cut it for the show and had left it on the bush instead, because it was the one Ellen had pointed at the week before she moved to Leeds. That one's not ready, Den, she had said. Don't you dare.
The judge stopped. Not at the bloom. At the bud. She bent close, tilted it toward the light the way you would check a pencil drawing for smudges, and said, "Who taught you to leave one closed?" He said nobody had. She pinned a card beside it anyway, first place, and moved on, and he stood holding the empty cloth while Maureen started to clap, slow and grudging.
That evening he cut the bud from the bench and carried it home in his jacket pocket, past the Co-op and the shuttered bakery. He stood it in a jam jar on the windowsill and watched it through the dark, waiting for it to open the way she had said it would.
