Rosemary sprig tied with string on an upper arm

Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large sprig of rosemary, with its needle-like leaves drawn in dark outline, runs diagonally across the inner arm and ends in a bound stem tied with a loop of string. The leaves are rendered with fine, layered linework and grey shading that gives them depth. The ink is entirely black and grey, set against a softly blurred studio background.

The shop on Cable Street shuts at eleven, but Mrs Okonedo leaves the shutter half up so the sodium light falls across the crates of herbs, and you know by the smell of them before you see her. You have come for rosemary. It is a Thursday in February and the pot on your windowsill has finally given up, its grey needles dropping into the sink every time you run the tap.

She does not ask what you want it for. She takes a fistful from the bin nearest the till, shakes off the wet, and winds a length of brown string around the stems twice, then pulls the knot tight with her teeth. 'Remembering,' she says, and presses the bundle into your hand as though it were change. You tell her you are not sure what you are remembering. She laughs and says that is the usual answer, and that rosemary never minded.

Walking home, you hold the sprig up under each lamp post. The bus shelter, the bakery with its shutters pulled down grey, the noodle place where someone is still mopping the step. The needles catch the light and throw it back in thin dark strokes, like the drawing your nan kept in a frame by the back door, the one she said her own mother had made from memory, never once looking at the plant.

At the corner of your street you stop, because the smell has got into your coat and you realise you have been breathing properly for the first time in a month. You untie the string, then tie it again, tighter, and carry the sprig the last few yards like something that might still be needed in the morning.
