Black and grey botanical tattoo of two roses, leaves and a pocket watch with a beaded chain across the inner forearm.

Roses, leaves and pocket watch on a forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo covers the forearm and shows two large roses with shaded petals and detailed leaves, with a pocket watch whose dial displays Roman-style numerals partly visible near the wrist side. A line of beads runs from the watch towards the elbow, linking the elements. The work combines clean outlines with soft grey shading, and the photo is taken at an angle against a blurred indoor background.

The watch came across the counter on a wet Tuesday, its chain looped through a fistful of jet beads that had been counting something for years. Dora Venn turned it over with the fine tweezers, the way her father had taught her, and read the dial. The numerals ran round to a quarter to five and stopped there. The minute hand was bent a hair's breadth, as if someone had knocked it against a doorframe in a hurry.

Outside, the harbour wall was thick with wild roses that the salt wind never quite managed to finish off. Mr Hale from the chandlery had carried the watch in himself, wrapped in a chamois. It had been his brother's, he said, lost over the side of the *Grace Lowry* in the March gale, and handed back to the town by a fisherman's boy who had found it tangled in a lobster pot. Mr Hale did not want it running for any reason he cared to explain. He only wanted it to show the right time again before the boat was blessed on Saturday.

She worked through the afternoon with the lamp pulled close. Grit came out from under the balance wheel. A tiny spring was cleaned, oiled and set back into its cradle. When she finally opened the back she found a folded slip of paper pressed flat against the movement, written in pencil and gone soft with damp. It held a single line of tide times and a name she did not know. She put it in the envelope with the watch and said nothing about it.

At five past four the second hand swept round for the first time in months. Dora set the hands to the true hour, closed the case and laid the beads across her palm. Through the window the roses on the wall shivered in the wind, and the minute hand, freed at last, walked on into the rest of the afternoon.
