Wildflower bouquet tattoo on a calf

Botanical · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A bare leg, cropped below the knee and above the ankle, shows a bouquet of flowers tattooed up the calf. An orange rose, a dark red poppy, pale pink blossoms and blue-violet flowers sit among grey-shaded leaves and stems. The linework is fine and the shading is soft, and the colour is strongest on the rose and the top flowers, with the foliage and lower stems in grey.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ruth had been told the bouquet had to look gathered that morning, not arranged for a painting. Mr Okonedo at the seed house in Maidstone wanted the poppy redder than any real poppy, because customers bought colour, not botany. She sat at the scrubbed table with a jar of water and a stub of brush, the window still black, and tried to make a rose look careless.

The sample packets had come back from the printers smudged. The orange rose was to be the cover, with the poppy beside it. Ruth had grown up among the seed trials, rows of stock and foxglove behind her father's glasshouse, and she knew which blossoms opened first when the frost lifted. She mixed grey from lamp black and a little ultramarine for the stems, because the leaves had to recede behind the flowers or the eye would not know where to rest.

Dawn came up over the glasshouse roofs at twenty to six. Her father's tin of blue-violet pigment was empty, so she had used the last of the cornflower dye from the back shelf, and it went on pale and honest. She painted the small pink blossom last, a thing the printers would shrink to nothing.

When the proofs arrived by post a fortnight later, the cover was wrong. The printer had cropped the rose and kept only the poppy. Ruth folded the sheet, put it in her coat, and walked out to the rows where the real poppies were bending in the wind, counting the buds she had not painted.
