Sailing ship and compass sleeve
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A full sleeve tattoo shows a three-masted sailing ship with billowing sails, birds and a sunburst behind it, with a compass rose and a curled banner below. The shading uses soft grey gradients and fine linework, with a textured sky and rays radiating from the compass. The ink is entirely black and grey against pale skin, and the arm fills most of the frame.

The solar wind had backed round to the west again, and the foresail of the Halcyon Fen was snapping like a wet flag. I stood on the yard with a cold wrench in my glove and listened to Bosun Tark swearing below in three languages. Nobody trusted the automatic trim anymore. The sails were forty kilometres of mylar stretched between the masts, and the sun did not read the manual.

Captain Ilse Varga had a line painted above the chart table, in letters the colour of old bronze: she adjusted her sails. Her grandmother had painted it, she said, back when the first clippers still crossed between the moons. Beside the helm hung a brass compass rose that had lost its use when the drift lanes shifted, yet Ilse tapped it every watch as though it still knew something we did not.
The storm front hit at the fourth bell. Tark wanted the sails furled and the ship left to drift until the wind dropped. Ilse only looked at me. I clipped to the yard, read the rose's bearing against the sun's glare, and eased the foresail a few degrees off the flow, the way you would turn a cheek to the rain. The Fen groaned, heeled, then leapt forward on a gust that carried us clear of the Lagrange shoals, the debris field sliding past in silver sparks.
Back in the chart room my hands would not stop shaking. Ilse set the compass on the table between us. Its needle wavered, then settled on a heading that made no sense on any chart I owned. "Told you," she said, and went to check the sun.
