Sailing ship in a storm with compass on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large sailing ship with billowing sails and rigging sits on rough waves, with lightning striking across a dark sky behind it. A detailed compass rose is set at the top of the arm, overlapping the storm clouds. The shading is fine and smooth in black and grey, giving depth to the sails and the swirling clouds, and the design fills the upper arm and shoulder.

The sponge is still rising when the squall hits the harbour, and you know the weather before the shutters do. Rain comes sideways off the Tyne and rattles the glass, and the flour in the bins seems to hum with it. Hannah has the big ovens roaring and is already swearing at the dough hook, so you take the first tray of bloomers out yourself and slide them onto the rack the way you'd bring a boat about.

Above the proving cupboard hangs the brass compass your uncle Dessie brought back from a trawler that never came home. Its needle has stuck to north since spring, which he swore meant the thing was honest. Lightning flickers over the car park, white and forked, and for a second every shelf of cooling loaves throws a shadow across the wall like rigging.

At half four the bell over the door goes. A man in oilskins stands dripping on the mat, asking for two loaves for the lifeboat crew, who have not eaten since midnight. You wrap them in the good paper, and he looks at the compass for longer than he should. "Still stuck?" he asks.

You tap the glass. The needle swings free, shudders, and settles on the door, which is where the morning is coming from.
