Grim reaper and winged woman across a back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large black and grey back piece shows a hooded grim reaper with a skeletal hand reaching forward on the left, and a winged woman with flowing hair and a beaded rosary-style chain on the right. Clouds, a faint circular motif and a sleeve design with clouds and a wheel-like shape extend across the arm and upper background. The shading is smooth and highly detailed, with strong contrast between the dark hood and the lighter skin of the figures.

Dear Ada, you will think I have lost my wits, but I must put this down on paper before Mr Pryor's trunk goes out on Thursday's cart. The new lodger in number seven arrived on the evening tide with one case and a rosary of jet beads that clicked every time he climbed the stairs. He paid a month in advance in coins so worn the Queen's head had gone soft at the edges.

Each night since, the wind off the harbour has been strange. The clouds over the bay stack up like washing on a line, and the church clock at St Mary's stops at ten past no matter how often Tom winds it. Last Sunday I went up with clean sheets and found his door ajar. He was standing at the window with his back to me, and there was a woman on the sill, all wings and loosened hair, her face turned to the water. Between them the lamp threw a long grey shadow shaped like a hood, and I swear that shadow had its hand out, as though it were measuring the room for a coffin.
I did not scream. I set the sheets down and asked if he would like his tea. He laughed, a dry sound like cards being shuffled, and said the house would be quiet now. He said the tide had its own accounts to settle and he had only come to check the books.
On Thursday the cart came for his trunk, and number seven was empty, the bed stripped and folded at the foot. Nothing on the sill but a single jet bead, warm as a sixpence. I have kept it in my apron pocket. Come in August and I will show you, and we shall see whether that clock keeps time.
