Sailor pin-up with roses and HOPE banner

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A drawn pin-up woman in a white sailor cap with a small anchor motif, dark curled hair and red blush, set against red roses with green leaves. She holds a heart-patterned panel over a red and white striped top, and a tan ribbon banner at the bottom reads HOPE. Bold black outlines and flat areas of red, green, tan and white give the design a classic colour look on a cream background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mags had the cap on her head before the tug cleared the breakwater, the little anchor badge turned out toward the gulls, because her brother had sworn the sea would take anything that looked like it belonged to it. Eli was somewhere past the Needles by then, on a grey trawler that smelled of diesel and wet rope, and the only things she had of his were a tin of humbugs and a letter folded to the size of a playing card.

She read that letter on the harbour wall every morning for a month. It said very little. The fish were thin. The cook was a Scot who sang hymns off-key. Somebody had painted a rose on the wheelhouse door and the skipper had made them scrub it off, then painted a second one himself. Mags laughed at that, out loud, and an old man selling cockles looked up as if she had no business being happy.

When the autumn gales came in she tied a strip of red ribbon around the letter and fixed it to the rail beside the tea stall, where the wild roses grew over the wall and the petals had already gone the colour of Eli's jumper. Each evening she walked out with her cap pulled down hard, watching the grey line of the horizon for a hull she knew.

The trawler came in on a Tuesday with its flags up and every man aboard, and Eli was first down the gangway, shouting her name before his boots touched the stones. Mags did not wait for the gangway to settle. She untied the ribbon, let it go red across the water, and ran.
