Victory portrait with roses flash

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A coloured drawing of a woman in profile wearing a polka dot headscarf tied with a bow, with the word Victory in black script above her head. Pink and white roses with green leaves frame the figure, and a small heart on her neck reads Winston. The bold black outlines and flat colour fills give it a classic old school look on a plain cream background.

"Sister, is it true they're signing it tomorrow?" he asked. I told him the wireless had said so, though the wireless had said a great many things that week. He tapped the small blue heart on his neck, the one he'd had done in Portsmouth by a sailor with a steady hand, the letters of a girl's name gone soft at the edges. "Her name's Ada," he said. "She'll have my hide if I come home looking like a bruise."

I fetched him a rose from the jar on the trolley, one of the pink ones Mrs Hale had brought in from her garden that morning and that nobody had had the heart to throw out. He held it as though it might bruise too. Down the corridor the porter was already shouting that the street lamps were going back on, and somebody in the men's bay was singing, badly and with enormous feeling.

By four the singing had spread to every bed. I wrote VICTORY across the blackboard in capitals, then stood back and found my hands shaking so badly the chalk squeaked. Private Pryce was asleep with the rose on his chest, and for once I left the bell alone.
