Japanese-style drawing of a samurai skull in a helmet, surrounded by a serpent, skulls, white chrysanthemums and red lightning on a dark smoky background, with no body placement shown.

Samurai skull and serpent with chrysanthemums

Japanese · Mixed · Flash

The drawing centres on a skull wearing a samurai helmet and armour, with further skulls, a serpent coiling up the composition and a woman's face partly skeletal at the left edge. Fine, dense linework builds the textures of cloth, flesh and smoke, with heavier black shading behind the figures. Cream and beige tones dominate, with red lightning strokes, a yellow flame and red accents on the serpent, set against a near-black cloudy background.

The snow had closed the pass by dusk, so Tomoe had no choice but to let the stranger in out of the storm. He carried a lacquered helmet under one arm and a bundle of dried chrysanthemums tied with red thread under the other, and he asked for the room at the end of the corridor, the one behind the sliding screen painted with a serpent. Her brother Kenji shrugged and set out the charcoal. Tomoe brought tea, and the stranger thanked her without once lifting his eyes from the floor.

That night the lightning came without thunder, red forks laddering down the black sky above the valley and breaking the snow into light. Tomoe lay awake listening. Her grandmother had told her the room belonged to a soldier who came home from a lost battle, hung his helmet on the nail by the door, and never again looked at a living face. Every winter, the grandmother said, white flowers appeared on the shrine steps, and no one had ever seen who laid them there.

She went down with a lantern when the house was silent. The room was empty. The helmet sat on the futon with nothing inside it but a small grey skull, and smoke curled from a brazier that held no fire. The chrysanthemums lay scattered across the tatami like frost. On the screen, the painted serpent had a long scar along its back, the same mark the stranger's sleeve had hidden when he took off his coat. She knelt and understood, too late, that he had not been asking for shelter. He had been asking for a witness.

She poured two cups of tea and left them beside the helmet, then tied a red thread around its crest. In the morning the pass was open, the snow was clean, and both cups were empty.
