Saturn and rocket on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with blue hair tied in a bun is photographed from behind, showing two small tattoos on her upper back near the shoulder blade. The tattoos are a ringed planet resembling Saturn, placed higher on the left, and a small rocket angled diagonally below and to the right. Both are drawn in thin black linework with no shading, against plain pale skin and a white background.

The generator coughed twice before the lights came on over the Dodgem field, and Marnie Tolley, who had run the rocket ride at Skegness since she was nineteen, watched the bulbs flicker along the spines of the little tin rockets. Her uncle Frank had painted them himself in 1971, the year the Americans landed, and every nose still carried a name in faded red. Hers was Bluebell, because she had asked for it when she was eight and nobody had ever told her no.

The fair was closing for good at the end of the week. The council had sold the land to a supermarket, and the last night's takings sat in a biscuit tin under the ticket hut counter. Frank came down the boards with his stick and a paper bag of chips, lowered himself onto the step, and said the thing she had been dreading since March: he would not be here to see the tins go to the scrapyard.
She didn't argue. She took a chip, ate it slowly, and told him about the telescope stall on the pier, where a man in a cardigan sold a look at Saturn for a penny and swore the rings could be counted if you were patient enough. Frank laughed until he coughed. "Count them, then," he said. "Go on."
That night, after the last car had been let down, she climbed into Bluebell's seat, the one with the cracked windscreen, and let the motor turn without a single passenger. The ride creaked round under the dark. Above the pier the sky was clear for once, and she found the ringed planet low over the water, small and certain, exactly where Frank had said it would be. She counted the rings until the generator died.
