Taurus symbol on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with her hair in a loose bun is seen from behind against a plain white background. A small, thin black outline of the Taurus zodiac symbol, a circle with two horns, sits centrally on her upper back below the nape of the neck. The black and white photograph is evenly lit, with the tattoo as the clear focal point.

Nobody had ever seen it take coin. Tamsin, who kept the inn on the far side, said it had come over the Severn in a flood year and would walk back if it were given a riddle it could not answer. So the girl leaned on the gate and asked it what a ring was when it had no beginning and no end. The bull lowered its head, considered the question for the length of a slow breath, and pushed a circlet of worn brass across the sill with the tip of one horn. Then it turned and went back down the track the way it had come.
The brass was warm from the sun, and on the inside someone had scratched a tally in rows, a stroke for every crossing her father had made in thirty years, with a small cross beside the ones who had not come back to the stile. She counted them until her thumb ached. Then she hung the ring on the nail beside the gatepost, where the drovers could see it, and the next morning she let the first herd through without asking anyone for their names.
