Saved by grace script on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a dark script tattoo reading saved by grace, written in flowing joined lettering across the inner wrist and forearm. The linework is thin and even, with the ink appearing in a muted dark green-grey tone. Soft warm light falls on a gathered satin sheet behind the arm, with a silver cuff bracelet sitting near the tattoo.

Dear Tom,

The oven went cold on Tuesday, the same night the frost got into the pipes at Hallam Street, and Mr Pirie swore he would shut the doors for good. I came in at half three with yesterday's ash still in the grate and nothing rising. You always said I'd never manage a morning without you, and you were right. I swore at the flour plenty.
Mrs Okafor from the flat above brought a kettle down the back stairs without being asked, and her boy went round the terraces with a cart for coal. By five we had the fire drawing again. I'd like to say it was my doing, but the bellows were yours, the ones you mended with leather off Dad's old boots, and the draught only came right when I turned the damper the way you showed me. It was luck, and a lot of people who didn't have to come. I've decided to call that grace, since I can't think of a better word for it.
When the loaves came out brown at the bottom and pale on top, Mr Pirie stood in the doorway with his hat in his hands and said nothing for a long while. Then he cut the first one open, steam rising off it, and said only, "Well. We were not lost after all." I laughed so hard I had to sit on the flour bin.
Mrs Okafor said something while we scraped the grate that I keep turning over: you don't choose the morning you're rescued on, only whether you notice the hands. So I'm noticing. Come home when the ship's in. The bread is good now, and the oven is holding.
Love, Nell
