Cursive script lettering on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a forearm with a single line of cursive script tattooed diagonally from the wrist upwards. The letterforms are drawn in thin, even black linework with flowing loops and a few open strokes, and the blurred background keeps the focus on the ink. The soft grey tones and shallow depth of field give the image a calm, understated composition.

Come in closer, you under the awning, there's room by the eel stall if you stop dripping on the cabbages. Rain's been at this market since the bells of St Clement's rang seven, and it'll go on till the gutters choke, so you may as well hear a story while you wait.

Mrs Hale kept a sign-writing shop on Bridge Street, back when the shopfronts still had their names painted in gold leaf. Her apprentice, a lad called Tobias Fenn with ink under every nail, was given the job of lettering the new board for the bakery across the road. He worked a whole week on a single line, a flourish that curled up from the corner like smoke off a candle. Mrs Hale came by each evening, lamp in hand, said nothing, and only tapped the glass.
On the Friday the words were done: the bakery's name, and then, in the smallest hand he owned, a phrase the baker's widow had asked for about bread given daily. Tobias had the brush loaded when a gust tore the awning off its hook and the rain came sideways. His hand jerked. The last loop of the L slid long, and the tail of the stroke dropped into the grain of the wood like a snapped thread.
Mrs Hale studied it a long while, then took the brush herself. She didn't scrape it away. She followed the stray stroke round until it became a swallow's wing, and gave the widow the board for nothing. Tobias still walks past it every Friday, he says, and reads the mistake as the finest line on the street.
